Actress Jamie Rose's mom, Reta, always thought her daughter would grow up to be a writer.
She was right. Rose just released the self-help book, "Shut Up & Dance!: The Joy of Letting Go of the Lead – On the Dance Floor and Off" (Penguin, $16.95).
It took awhile for the prediction to come true because the Bullard High graduate has been busy with an acting career. Best known for playing Vickie Gioberti in the 1980s prime time soap opera "Falcon Crest," Rose also starred in her own TV series, "Lady Blue," and appeared in the cult film classic "Chopper Chicks in Zombietown" during her long career.
Rose's
family moved to Fresno from Los Angeles in 1974 because of her father's
job. She doesn't remember too much about the city and hasn't been back
since the early '80s. After a year at Fresno State, Rose moved back to
Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
"I didn't really know what I wanted to do, but I had been an actress when I was a child. My father had kept me on standby with the Screen Actors Guild, so I thought with my bright red hair I might be able to do commercials," Rose says.

"I didn't really know what I wanted to do, but I had been an actress when I was a child. My father had kept me on standby with the Screen Actors Guild, so I thought with my bright red hair I might be able to do commercials," Rose says.
She was right. She appeared in national commercials for Orbit Gum, M&M's and United Airlines.
In recent years, she's spent her time acting, teaching, taking dance lessons and writing the book. Her interest in dance came from a student who did a dance move as part of her class at California State University, Northridge. She traded private acting classes for dance lessons and has been dancing ever since.
The more dance she learned, the more she realized how the same principals could be used in life. Rose uses what she learned taking tango lessons to create her four-step system to better relationships: Listen, Open Your Heart, Voice Your Desires and Embrace.
"The tango is a very strict lead/follow partner dance. I started thinking how with relationships if two people are always battling to lead, there tend to be clashes and tension. Sometimes you have to let go and let the other person lead," says Rose. "I am a very strong person and all I wanted to do was lead. Once I learned how to share the lead, my relationship got better."
She stresses it's not a matter of always giving in but learning to be more pliable. And, if the person who takes the lead cares for their partner, they will be more aware of their partner's likes and dislikes.
Rose
is a prolific reader and many of her friends are writers. It wasn't
until author Samantha Dunn ("Faith in Carlos Gomez: A Memoir of Salsa,
Sex and Salvation") told her there was a book in her ideas that she sat
down to write. Rose split time between working on the movie "Route 30,
Too!," writing and crying.
"I would write for awhile and then cry to my husband how I didn't think I could finish the book," Rose says.
Rose wrote the book to help those with troubled relationships. She hopes to get another job – that combines her passions of dance and acting – if the book is successful. She doesn't think her acting career will get her on "Dancing With the Stars," but a best-selling book might get her invited.
"The competition part is the least interesting to me. I just want to do it for all the free dance lessons," Rose says. "Private lessons are very expensive."
